41.4 Miles (404 total)
Relatively smooth riding today, but I think 75% of it was uphill. And some tough hills too. Spent more time today in my lowest gear than any other. And there was one "road" in the beginning that the route took us on that would've been impossible for cars, and we had to walk our bikes at least half a mile up. But we made it!
We're staying at Monastero San Pietro, a monastery located at about the highest point on this hilltop town. Apparently, they let people stay who are doing the Pilgrims Path on the path known as Via Francigena - a path that leads from Amsterdam to Rome. We'll be following it for a couple days. You might need the Pilgrims Passport to stay here... Not 100% sure, but they stamp it. Really impressed with the place! A bed, bathroom with toilet paper, and Wi-Fi! We also paid for breakfast and dinner. Dinner was 10 euros, and they brought out bread, wine, and just enough pasta to be enough for one person, but not two. We knew we'd be heading to the store for more. But then they brought out lettuce, nectarines, burger patties in a thick tomato sauce, and baked zucchini. We were full, and definitely considered getting it again tomorrow.
Sounds like a great dinner!
